The Story of SAP Concur: From a Cardboard Box to a Billion Transactions a Year

In 1993, if you wanted software, you drove to an electronics store, picked a cardboard box off the shelf, and took it home. Inside was a floppy disk. That's how technology was distributed back then. That's exactly how the story of SAP Concur began. Today it's the global leader in corporate expense management, with more than 85 million users and over 1 billion transactions processed every year.

How SAP Concur Revolutionized Expense Management

The idea was born out of a frustration anyone who has ever traveled for work knows well: the stack of crumpled receipts in your shirt pocket after a week on the road, and the endless expense report waiting when you get back. It was 1993, and the best corporate tool available was Microsoft Excel. Booking travel meant calling agents, and the commercial internet had barely taken its first steps.

SAP Concur's journey of innovation reflects what we strive for at Genesis Consulting: turning complex processes into agile operations that generate real savings and financial efficiency for our clients.

The Technology Evolution: From the Box to SaaS

The years that followed weren't easy. Selling boxed software licenses wasn't a scalable model, and the company flirted with failure more than once. That's when Steve Singh, then CEO, made a bet that was visionary for its time: abandon the boxed model and offer the product over the internet, by subscription. If the customer used it, they paid; if not, they didn't.

Today we call that SaaS. In 2000, the term barely existed. Concur was a pioneer, blazing a trail that giants like Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow would later follow. The bet paid off: the company went public, stayed listed for 16 years, and grew steadily until SAP acquired it in 2014 for $8.3 billion.

More than thirty years later, Concur has become a global standard. The irony is that while today's market debates generative AI, SAP Concur had already been using machine learning for more than a decade. Today, the technology reads receipts, categorizes expenses, and flags fraud automatically, dramatically cutting reimbursement time and improving financial accuracy.
