World Pediactric Project
In mid-January Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Genesis Consulting, Karen Booth Adams traveled down to the island of Saint Vincent with the leaders and pediatric surgical team of the World Pediatric Project.
The World Pediatric Project is a 10 year old charity organization which aims to bring life-changing medical care to children in developing countries. These children are suffering and dying from birth defects, illness, and injury routinely treated in the US.
Specifically focused on the Caribbean, the organization works to provide hospitals with experienced doctors, pediatric surgeons, and medical equipment to perform lifesaving procedures.
Karen went to learn more about the needs of the organization and the challenges faced by healthcare systems in developing countries.
The trip was also a profound education in logistical, political, and fundraising challenges. Saint Vincent’s hospital acts as a hub for WPP’s services and many of their young patients come from the surrounding islands. This is a problem for a hospital with limited capacity. One of their priority funding items is the addition of 10 more beds to increase capacity in their pediatric ward.
In a developing country, where tourism isn’t a large contributor to the economy, local healthcare providers need trained experts and resources to help them provide critical care services. 90% of the world’s population has access to only 10% of the world’s health resources. Luckily, WPP’s trained team of pediatric specialists means there’s hope for many of these children of the eastern Carribbean.
Genesis’ Mary Fowlkes chaired last year’s primary fundraiser that raised over $500,000 for this well-deserving organization. Karen has been asked to join the board of the WPP and plans on getting very involved this year. You can help as well! It costs about $2000 to bring a doctor on a medical mission trip for the week. You can help sponsor a trip here.
Most of the volunteer doctors are giving up their personal and vacation time to help these children in need. As one doctor has said, “This is medicine in its purest form. This is why we all went to medical school.”
Help these doctors help children. Please donate to the World Pediatric Project today.
